About History Day

The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Education Center invites your students to participate in New York City History Day on Sunday, March 11, 2018. New York City History Day is an education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics. By participating in History Day, students can research topics related to the annual theme and can express themselves creatively through various formats such as exhibit boards, documentaries, websites, papers, and performances.

The History Day methodology supports teachers and schools as they work towards aligning curriculum and instructional priorities with Common Core Standards demonstrated through College and Career Ready student performance tasks. Read the report of how and where NHD aligns with the Common Core Standards here. National History Day was awarded the prestigious 2011 National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama.

Teacher Workshop: Conflict and Compromise in History

Discover conflict and compromise throughout New York City’s history using the Museum’s extraordinary exhibitions and collections. Engage with artifacts, photographs, maps, and other primary sources and walk away with new resources, teaching tools, and content knowledge to use in your classroom tomorrow!

Resource Fair: Discovering Archives and Databases

Are you looking for primary resources for your classroom? Do you want to access an archive for your upcoming research project? Join us to meet archivists, learn where to access all of the resources New York City has to offer, and discover primary sources at the Museum! Students and teachers welcome.

Student Workshops
Students can view projects from the 2017 New York City History Day program. Classes will have the opportunity to examine students' thesis statements and use of primary and secondary sources, learn about additional History Day categories, and find out how to participate in the 2018 New York City History Day competition.
